What a time to be alive. Women’s soccer has been steadily gaining momentum and recognition worldwide, showcasing the exceptional talent of these athletes. All the way from grassroots soccer to the professional level, the rise of women’s soccer is a testament to the investments made in gender equality in sports.
Let’s dive into the factors contributing to this rise.
Historical pov
Women’s soccer has a long history dating back to the late 19th century. However, it faced significant challenges and discrimination, with women’s leagues and tournaments struggling for recognition and support. Despite these obstacles, female soccer players such as Mia Hamm, Carli Lloyd, and Abby Wambach (to name a few) have revolutionized the sport, paving the way for today’s generation of soccer players.
Global successes
In recent years, women’s soccer has witnessed a surge in popularity and success on the global stage. Events such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup or the UEFA Women’s Champions League have become highly anticipated tournaments, drawing millions of viewers and showcasing the exceptional talent of female players. International teams such as the United States, Netherlands, Brazil, and Germany, or club teams such as FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC, Olympique de Lyon, and Paris-Saint Germain have dominated these tournaments, captivating audiences with their unique styles of play.
Increased Investment and Support
One of the key factors driving the rise of women’s soccer is the increased investment and support from governing bodies, clubs, and sponsors. Clubs like FC Barcelona have managed to break the 23-year-old official world record attendance for a women’s soccer match. They attracted a crowd of 91,553 at the Spotify Camp Nou during their UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Real Madrid in March of 2022. Just a few weeks later, they broke this record AGAIN, that time recording a crowd of 91,648.
Here in the United States, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has become one of the hottest organizations in the past few years. Established in 2012, they’ve been expanding over the years with teams in LA, San Jose, Chicago, Houston, Kansas City, NY/NJ, North Carolina, Orlando, Portland, Louisville, San Diego, Seattle, Utah, Washington, and are planning on expanding to Boston by the end of 2024.
Increased Investment and Support
As women’s soccer continues to rise in prominence, the future looks bright for female athletes around the world. With increased support, investment, and recognition, women’s soccer is poised to become even more competitive and captivating in years to come.
