It was 5:30 p.m. and I was just about ready to leave work. While packing my planner and laptop into my bag, I saw my phone going off out of the corner of my eye. I noticed that my boss who was on a ski vacation in Vail, Colorado was calling me. I picked up the phone and heard the panic in his voice as he asked me if our iconic USA CUP Ball was missing.
I laughed to myself and reminded him that it was April 1.
He proceeded to tell me that after having retired from the ski slopes for the day, he turned on his phone and noticed two missed call notifications. Both calls were inquiries from reputable news organizations about the validity of the image posted on the National Sports Center’s Facebook page. Was the post was an April Fools’ joke?
Having devised the prank ourselves, my coworker and I were quite flabbergasted. Had we just pulled off the best April Fools’ joke in NSC history?
While we were able to trick some people, others hadn’t fallen into our April Fools’ trap. Here’s how some people responded to the post:
These users couldn't believe their eyes:
Other users realized it was April Fools' Day and responded with humor:
But quite frankly, a lot of users mentioned how unimpressed they were with our Photoshop job:
Alright Anthony, we get it. We'll work on our Photoshop skills. But in the meantime, let's focus on how this joke reminded us about the importance of the USA CUP Ball as a monument in our community.
Our community really cares about this monument, and no matter how you feel about the Photoshop job, it’s important to realize how many people engaged in our prank. The ball is iconic. It’s not only a symbol of the NSC and USA CUP; it’s a symbol of youth sports in Minnesota. We’re pleased to confirm that the ball is safe and sound and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
