The Velodrome concluded its 30th season of operation in August of 2019 and was decommissioned due to safety concerns and a replacement price tag of over $1 million. The 250-meter cycling track had reached the end of its lifetime with 42 miles of wood strips needing frequent repairs. The track was torn down in the fall of 2020.
In the following spring, the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission (the state agency overseeing the NSC) approved the sale which would allow the district to restructure the road for safer access to Centerview Elementary and NSC property. The existing road that turns into the property from Davenport Street will move to a new intersection at 103rd Avenue, improving safety and traffic flow around the school. The new area will also include green space designed for student use.
Construction on the site is expected to be complete by the end of October.
