If you’re counting down the days to take the new lighted artificial-turf fields on fields 48 and 49 on the NSC campus, you can start lacing up your shoes.
Over the past two weeks, the Field Turf crew rolled out the new turf, then stitched and stretched it. Logos for both the National Sports Center and Spring Lake Park Schools were stitched into the surface on Thursday. The final stage, the laying in the sand and rubber infill, is currently underway and should be completed in about a week.
The infill is a 50/50 mix of sand and rubber – 278 tons of each to cover the entire surface area. The final dimension of the turfed surface will be 120 yards north-south, and 172 yards east-west, totaling 185,400 square feet.
The fields should open for play during the week of September 16.
This cost of this field improvement project is being shared by the NSC and Spring Lake Park Schools. The School District will have priority use of the fields during the school day and during normal after-school hours. The NSC will take over usage during the evening, on weekends, and during large tournaments, including USA CUP.
