Herb Brooks Foundation runs development clinics Herbie would have been proud of

Herb Brooks Foundation volunteers are giving developmental hockey lessons in the Minneapolis St. Paul area to children who don’t normally have access to the game. For five weeks, these lessons will be taking place at the Parade Ice Garden in Minneapolis and Charles Schulz-Highland Arena in St. Paul. The recently concluded winter session featured the St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Team and the Minnesota Wild.

Now, the spring session waiting list continues to grow, and more than 30 children have registered thus far.

In the upcoming weeks, plenty of people are volunteering time to make sure these clinics run smoothly. Rick McKelvie, who’s been involved with the Herb Brooks Foundation for many years, will run the clinic for younger children. The Canada native comes from a hockey family and has been a staple in running the indoor and outdoor clinics and events year-round. Rick specializes in teaching beginner skaters the basic ways to improve their skating abilities each week.

Spring hockey tends to be the best hockey. The conclusion of the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament and the start to the Frozen Four has kept Minnesotans busy, but fans often forget the importance of root hockey programs like these clinics that the Herb Brooks Foundation puts on. Registration for the summer clinic will open June 1, and the program will take place at the same locations starting July 12.
