TV networks and online platforms are doing their part to make this next month’s COVID-19 quarantine a little bit more bearable for people. Many streaming services are offering free 30-day trials for new customers who will be able to access original series, documentaries, specials and movies through online streaming services. Keep your eye on these upcoming shows meant to keep you sane while you’re being forced to stay inside for the time being.
Netflix
- March 25th— “Crip Camp” A favorite at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is about a camp for disabled kids that spawned the disability rights movement and just released. Higher Ground, the company led by former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle, provided funding.
- March 27th— “Ozark” The third season of the Emmy-winning crime drama stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney.
- April 1st— “Sunderland Til I Die” The second installment of a documentary series about the struggles of an English soccer club. The Independent deemed the first season “triumphant TV.”
- April 17th— “Black AF” A new show from Blackish creator Kenya Barris, starring Barris and Rashida Jones, hopes to reinvent the family sitcom.
HBO
- March 16th— “The Plot Against America” David Simon, who created The Wire, adapts Phillip Roth’s novel portraying an alternate history in which Charles Lindbergh beats Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential election. The show premiered on March 16 on HBO, but new episodes will appear weekly on Sunday nights.
- March 31st— “The Scheme” A new documentary about a college basketball scandal that ensnared coaches, players, sneaker companies and some unsavory characters.
- April 12— “Insecure” The new season of Issa Rae’s show about a young woman searching for answers in South L.A.
Hulu
- April 8th— “Parasite” The recipient of this year’s Oscar for best picture will make its streaming debut.
- April 15th— “Mrs. America” Cate Blanchett stars as Phyllis Schlafly, who fought against the Equal Rights Amendment and embodied the backlash among some women against the feminist movement.
Acorn TV, Disney+ and Amazon Prime all offer free trials before charging a card after the monthly subscription expires. “Vice” will make its Showtime debut Sunday, March 29 after spending the last six years with HBO. Your new best friend might be a streaming service, and that’s okay. You spend a lot of time together. These streaming services are looking to provide a much-needed respite for people in these challenging times. Enjoy it.
