Carla Berg cup goes to Eau claire
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (UWEC) took home the Carla Berg Cup, the winning title of the 2020 WCCHA Tournament, on Feb. 9 at the Super Rink in Blaine.
The Western Collegiate Club Hockey Association is a conference featuring members from universities and colleges in the Upper Midwest.
UWEC extended its 19-game win streak by defeating Gustavus 2-1 to capture an automatic bid to the 2020 Central Regional Tournament that takes place in Allendale, Michigan Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
The Bulldogs earned their third WCCHA title and first since championship since their 2015-2016 season. Despite going into the tournament in fourth place, the Blugolds now have an overall record of 21-7.
Eight teams split into the four regions that competed at the Super Rink over the snowy February weekend. St. Thomas and NDSU both fell in their semifinal games as Eau Claire and Gustavus came close to dropping points in games that only had a one goal difference.
The Blugolds will now head to the 2020 Central Regional Tournament that will be hosted on the campus of Grand Valley State later this month. There are four regional tournaments that serve as part of the ACHA postseason for Men’s Division II Club Hockey. Each Region sends four representatives to the National Tournament and the top two ranked teams in each region automatically advance to nationals.Â
