https://www.nscsports.org/After taking a bit of a construction pause during Target USA CUP last week, the National Sports Center’s push to install artificial turf on fields 48 and 49 is going back into high gear. We talked with Tom Dimke, of Dimke Excavating, the prime contractor, to get an update.
Dimke reports that several pieces of the project are going on simultaneously:
Concrete curbing and fence posts have been installed around much of the two-field complex.
One light tower, along the north sideline, has been installed. This tower had to go up first; it’s situated behind a fence line. Twin 80-foot towers will eventually go up – one on the north and one on the south sidelines. Four more 50-foot towers will be installed — two each on the west and east sidelines. Dimke said the light towers should be installed by August 1.
Collector pipe, basically a drainage system, is being laid down.
The stone-gravel base has been partially laid down. The gravel base will eventually be 7 ½ inches deep. A laser-guided grader is being used level the surface to the correct grade. The field will be slightly crowned. The corwn will actually run east-west, and each half-field will slope north and south at a 0.5 percent grade.
The turf itself is scheduled to be delivered on August 6. The final dimension of the turfed surface will be 120 yards north-south, and 172 yards east-west.
Once the turf has been installed, sand and rubber-pellet infill will be spread over the surface. Dimke said the fields should be ready for play in late August.
This coast of this field improvement project is being shared by the NSC and Spring Lake Park Schools. The School District will have priority use of the fields during the school day and during normal after-school hours. The NSC will take over usage during the evening, on weekends, and during large tournaments, including USA CUP.
