Like many at the National Sports Center, I’ve swapped my traditional desk and office life to work at the greener pasture that is Victory Links Golf Course. The 18-hole Links course has been running for the last month thanks to some of the Sports Center’s full-time employees who are volunteering to work shifts in order for the course to stay open. A resume builder for sure, working the golf course has given me a different perspective of how the PGA-Tour designed course is so well maintained and all the hard work that goes into prepping the course for everyday play. This is my second new job in less than a year, but if it weren’t for redeployment, I would have never become a better driver.
Parking is easier
Whether it’s 90 degrees and back or parallel, driving golf carts has made me a better at parking by making sure all the carts are perfectly parked in sync with each other.

I take shortcuts
The nice things about driving a golf cart is that you kind of have the freedom to go wherever you want to go. It’s nice being able to access certain places of the course quicker through being able to take all the shortcuts or go off road in order to get from point A to B.
There’s a diverse amount of driving options available
While working at the golf course, I’m not just driving golf carts all day. I get to choose between a diverse range of maintenance vehicles like the picker. Responsible for collecting all the range balls, the picker is pretty much one big game of hungry hungry hippos. When you drive the picker, the slower the better!
Carts are easier to maintain and clean
My car’s a mess because if I were to ever need literally anything, there’s a good chance whatever I was looking for could be found in my trunk. In a golf cart, all you have is a cubby and two holders for your golf bags. Golf carts are way easier to maintain. All you have to do is check the tire PSI like you would with your car, spray it down with water and disinfect! The sun is perfect for self-drying.
Golf carts are great for teaching kids how to drive
Let the kid crash the golf cart before the car. As crazy as it might sound, golf carts can help kids who are learning how to drive by teaching them control and awareness.
They tell you when you’re in reverse
There’s the most annoying sound whenever you are in reverse while driving a golf cart. Cars don’t have that, hence the image you have in your head of the person who thinks they’re in reverse in their driveway and end up halfway through the garage door.

It’s basically a Jeep
No doors, no problem, and everyone feels cooler when you’re in a jeep with no doors, no matter how unsafe it actually feels.
Golf courses, tourist attractions, residential areas and college campuses are places you might see golf carts pretty frequently. I’ve only seen people who live in Bearpath Township actually own golf carts at their leisure, but don’t be surprise if you see more rolling around soon. I don’t think I’ll invest in one, but there’s no doubt I’ll be an expert driver after golf season!
