July has been a busy month at Victory Links Golf Course. After hosting the PGA Tour 3M Open qualifying events earlier this month, the facility worked with Spring Lake Park Golf to put on a brand new high school event, the Midsummer Classic, a Northwest Suburban Conference scrimmage, on Thursday, July 23.
Victory Links Head Golf Professional Tom Kirkland and Spring Lake Park Head Coach Jim Stern came up with the event and worked together to make it happen. The pair felt it was important to provide playing time to students who missed out on the 2020 season because of COVID-19 restrictions earlier this year.
“We are happy to give back a very small portion of a high school season that players missed out on,” said Kirkland. “It’s the last time many of them will play competitive golf. It’s fun to see many of the faces we missed in the spring this year enjoying the competition and the golf course in its peak condition.”
13 teams and 80 players participated in the scrimmage, and Victory Links handed out trophies and raffle prizes throughout the event.
“It was a great event,” said Stern. “We hope it will take place on a perfect day like this for years to come.”
Maple Grove finished first and Armstrong second. Armstong’s Johnathan Essen was the top medalist shooting a -6 round of 65.
